Ingredients
1 (12-pack) Hawaiian Sweet Rolls
1 pound shaved steak (ribeye or sirloin)
1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced
8–10 slices provolone cheese
2 tablespoons butter
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
½ teaspoon garlic powder
½ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon black pepper
2 tablespoons melted butter (for brushing rolls)
1 teaspoon sesame seeds (optional)
Instructions
1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
2. Carefully slice the entire slab of Hawaiian sweet rolls horizontally through the middle. Place the bottom half in the prepared dish.
3. In a large skillet, melt 1 tablespoon butter over medium heat. Add sliced onion and cook 8-10 minutes until caramelized. Remove and set aside.
4. Add olive oil and remaining 1 tablespoon butter to the skillet over medium-high heat. Add shaved steak in an even layer (cook in batches if needed). Season with garlic powder, salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce. Cook 3-5 minutes until browned. Drain excess liquid if desired. Combine with cooked onions.
5. Spread beef and onion mixture evenly over the bottom rolls. Top with provolone slices.
6. Place top half of rolls over cheese. Brush with melted butter and sprinkle sesame seeds.
7. Cover loosely with foil; bake 10 minutes. Remove foil and bake 3-5 more minutes until tops are golden brown.
8. Let rest a few minutes, then slice and serve warm.
Notes
For best results, use thinly sliced beef (partially freeze for easier slicing). Do not overcrowd the pan when cooking beef to ensure proper browning. Caramelize onions slowly for sweetness. Cover with foil first to melt cheese without burning rolls. Serve immediately for optimal gooeyness. Leftovers can be refrigerated in airtight container for 2-3 days; reheat in oven at 300°F for 10-15 minutes.
